Last Sunday we talked about looking back and looking forward, something we all do this time of year. Many of us look back and don’t like what we see of ourselves, so we begin the new year with lots of “resolutions,” committing most commonly to things like losing weight, eating better, exercising more, etc. I, too have succumbed to this activity many times in the past… to no avail!
I would challenge us to look back, but only in order to find the distinct blessings of the most recent year… then commit to staying alert to recognize and celebrate all the blessings that come our way in 2018. I think this might be the preferred biblical state of mind.
In Matthew 25, Jesus tells the parable of the 10 young bridesmaids. The foolish ones didn’t make sure their oil lamps were full, so when the “party” started they missed it!!
I believe if we can simply commit to seeing what God is doing, and noticing the blessings (both large and small) that we receive, then we won’t make the mistake so many in every generation have made… missing the joy of life God sets out for us!!
So, as we grumble about the cold, or become frustrated with the snow, let’s all commit to being watchful of where and what God is up to, and be intentional about seeing and celebrating all that is happening in our lives! If so, I predict that this coming Sunday WE will hear the same words Jesus heard at his baptism…Luke 3: 22, “You are my child, whom I dearly love; in you I find happiness.” Then we will all bask in God’s love together!!
